KARE
Update
Chair: Dr. John Fennig
Under the
leadership of Dr. John Fennig, the KARE committee has thrived!!!
At the SIOP annual meeting, KARE was presented with commendations
from the State of Louisiana. Vicki Vandaveer and I were entrusted
with beautiful framed versions of this. As you know, she led
the APA event last summer, putting in hundreds of hours to produce
a great event - covered by radio, TV, and print media over several
days. I am coordinating the ongoing consulting work with the
KARE leadership team.
E-version of this award can be seen at: http://www.dric.com/images/LA-Award.pdf

the goods. These clients are:
" LA-SPCA
" Audubon Institute
" Benjamin Franklin High School
" New Orleans Police Department (2 projects)
" Family Services of Greater New Orleans
" Presentations through local SHRM (in the works for summer)
It is due to the skill and effort of our colleagues that we
have this prestigious award. Thank you!

Member-at-Large
Reported by Virginia Mullin
As the elected Member-at-Large, I am pleased to see the recognition
given to several of our Society members and I also want to share news
of those who are included in my committee.
1. WEBSITE: First of all, I want to again commend Dan Fisher for his
great job with our new website! If you haven't already done so, please
check it out -
and enjoy! (note that to access the member section
for the first time use the first letter of your first name followed
by your last name - e.g., Adam Smith = ASmith - and use the password
1234).
2. PUBLIC RELATIONS: We have received notice that several of our members
have appeared in the media. For example, we were informed that Ben
Dattner and Dan Fisher were featured on CNBC concerning the topic
"Jerks in the Workplace" and informed of Philip Zimbardo's
upcoming television appearance. Also Div. 13 President-elect Stewart
Cooper was interviewed on Chicago area television and radio concerning
comments on university counseling centers and concerns generated by
the tragedy in Blacksburg, Virginia. As members, I hope that you will
inform the listserv of others making the news.
I have talked with the public relations office of APA in Washington
and they are happy to help our members learn more about generating
publicity in newspapers, internet, radio, and television. A staff
member of this office is willing to come to our next mid-winter conference
in Austin, Texas, to inform us further. This is in follow-up of a
talk given by APA at our San Antonio meeting. Please feel free to
call APA if you wish more information in this area. We are already
the subject of regular articles in the APA Monitor, so the current
emphasis is on independent, local, or national (or international)
publicity.
3. PSYCHOLOGICALLY HEALTHY WORKPLACE: Once again, the national recognition
ceremony for Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award winners was held
in Washington in early March. This year it was an even bigger event
and was meaningful, as usual, as well as fun. Each year more states
initiate this program through their state associations, so if your
state does not have a PHWA program you may want to email David Ballard
at APA at DBallard@apa.org. David has also announced that a new newsletter
titled "Good Company" is available to us at the website
http://www.phwa.org.
Thanks for allowing me the privilege of acting as Member-at-Large
for our organization. It is a privilege to work with so many talented
individuals. Looking forward to seeing you in San Francisco in August!

Note from President-Elect
Reported by Stewart Cooper
The main goals
of my role as President-Elect are to support the work of the current
President, Randy White, and the three Members-at-Large, Virginia Mullin,
Sheila Kampa, and David Brewer, with their respective areas of responsibility.
In the past few months, this has been done through participating in
conference and individual phone calls, email correspondence, and the
development of documents to support the work of the Society. A partial
list of accomplishments would include the creation of a leadership
handbook for members of the governance board; the selection of a second
student representative to serve a two year term with the board with
year one being as junior rep and year two as senior rep; supporting
the APA conference program being selected and submitted for publication;
and the Division receiving accolades for its ongoing contributions
to the Psychologically Healthy Workplace initiative. Details on these
appear in reports from the Member-at-Large.
A good deal of
my energy in the past three months was allocated toward supporting
the Midwinter conference in Miami as well as selecting and supporting
the planning team for the upcoming Midwinter conference to be held
in Austin, Texas. The latter will take place next February 7-10 so
save those dates! As part of my presidential focus on inclusiveness,
I sent out a call for volunteers to all in the Division with a follow-up
with those who have expressed interest. My upcoming efforts in the
coming months will focus on preparing for the August APA convention
in San Francisco and for further developing the communication and
work processes of the Governance Board.
I am still considering
specific Presidential initiatives that could be a focus for 2007-2008
and would welcome your input. Email me at stewart.cooper@valpo.edu.
