Welcome to the Society of Consulting Psychology!
For those of you who are not familiar with SCP, we are Division 13 of the American Psychological Association. Our members are engaged in all areas of consultation: to businesses, to educational institutions, to non-profits, to the military, and more. Of approximately 1,000 members, roughly half work in a solo private practice and another quarter in psychologically-based consulting firms. The Society strives to be a professional “home” for consulting psychologists, and offers a number of relevant and productive tools to help members in their efforts. The Consulting Psychology Journal present research and thought leadership on all issues related to our practice, while our newsletter, The Consulting Psychologist, keeps members in touch with current issues and other consultants. Our Mid-Winter Conference each February brings stimulating keynote speakers and hands-on learning opportunities as well as time for networking with our talented and collegial members; attendees consistently tell us the sense of community created at the Mid-Winter Conference is both professionally and personally rewarding. We present an increasingly significant amount of programming at the annual APA conference each August. We have local groups across the country that meet regularly. We offer Continuing Education credits through workshops, our conference, and online Distance Learning seminars. If you are involved in consultations in any arena, we are likely to have something of interest to you. You can easily find more information about each of these elsewhere on this web site.
For those of you who have already discovered SCP, we are entering an exciting period of transition. We have realigned the Society’s board and committee structure to better meet your needs. We will soon have Domain Leaders responsible for creating knowledge, providing education opportunities, advocating for consulting psychology, and engaging our membership. Simultaneously, we are increasing the focus and accountability expected from elected officers. And, perhaps because of the value our members find by being part of SCP, we have grown to the size that the oversight of our numerous activities and can no longer be handled through the significant time investments made by a volunteer leadership team and board. Thus we are, for the first time, introducing professional resources that will work in conjunction with our volunteer leadership team. Through the careful guidance of past presidents, we are financially stable and have the ability to draw on such resources to help us meet the needs of our membership, which will in turn increase the value of the services you receive. More information on this will be forthcoming.
As President for the 2009-2010 year, it is my honor and pleasure to oversee these important changes, in conjunction with Greg Pennington (Past-President), David Brewer (President Elect) and the rest of the SCP board. We are excited about the future of SCP. If you know about SCP, we hope you will be as well. If you are new to our Division, get involved and see why we are growing!
